This year is flying by, and Americade is already upon us. From Saturday, June 1 to Saturday, June 8, riders of all brands of touring motorcycles will converge on Lake George, New York to meet, socialize, learn, shop, eat and drink with their fellow riders.
Americade is my favorite rally. It's not the all-out drunken party that strikes fear into the townspeople. No, this is the family friendly, sober, yet still fun gathering where you're more likely to leave with information than a tattoo. Oh, you can still get drunk and rowdy, if that's your style. Just don't expect to see a lot of flesh or public drunkenness -- it's just not part of the accepted behavior here.
My favorite part of Americade is the great selection of guest speakers. I love to learn more about motorcycle travel and motorcycle safety. This year, Rider Magazine's Mark Tuttle will be speaking, and so will Motorcycle Consumer News' Fred Rau. Both gentlemen are among my favorite magazine writers, and both are experienced touring riders.
There are all kinds of fun events, too, including a Motorcycle Rodeo, a professional stunt show and skydiving show, the Globe of Death, motorcycle demos and displays, and of course, Tour Expo.
Tour Expo gathers hundreds of motorcycle equipment and service vendors in one place. It's a great place to try (and buy) that new helmet, riding jacket or other piece of gear. You can get a new set of shocks and tires installed, while you have a patch sewn on your jacket and get your riding boots re-soled. All while eating great barbeque. Tour Expo is a like an outdoor mall completely devoted to motorcycling. It's great fun.
If you haven't made your plans yet, it's not too late. Check out any of the eight Best Western Hotels in the Lake George vicinity, and ride on up for the best rally on the East Coast.
