2010 Olympics in Vancouver, BC - You Gotta Be Here!
February 10 2010 by Julie Drossos
Just days away from the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and the energy in the city is palpable. I'm lucky enough to live downtown right in the heart of the excitement. British Columbia's (BC) motto for the 2010 Olympics is "You Gotta Be Here" and it's true. The buzz in the city is electric. Vancouverites are so proud to welcome the world to our beautiful city. This morning I walked by the Olympic Countdown Clock and got a surge of excitement as I noticed we are down to the last few days before the torch arrives here in Vancouver and we kick off the games with the Opening Ceremonies on Friday, February 12th.
The best part about the Olympics and all the fun and celebration that comes along with it - for both locals and visitors alike - is that there is so much to do that is absolutely free! I'm going to be blogging a few times over the next couple weeks as we welcome the world to Vancouver, and this week I'll talk about some of the very cool, very free stuff you can take part in if you're lucky enough to be in town for the games.
Zip It!
Have you ever heard of Zip-Lining or Zip-Trekking? It's that crazy thing where people for some crazy reason decide to strap themselves into a harness and zip down a cable across a canyon or forest. Well how about doing it in the heart of downtown Vancouver during the Olympics! Ziptrek Ecotours, the world-renowned zip lining company from Whistler, BC is generously offering free zip-trekking right in downtown Vancouver during the games! Daredevils will zip over 550 feet across Vancouver's famed Robson street, high above the throngs of revelers at over six stories high off the street! Click here for a live webcam of the site.
Live It!
There will be two "LiveCity" locations which will host a number of free concerts and events. I'VE taken notice of the set-up of these venues for outdoor entertainment over the past few days and I am pretty sure these will be two non-stop rockin' spots through the games. LiveCity Downtown is located in the core of downtown Vancouver, at Cambie and Georgia streets. It will include a giant screen to show coverage of the games, music, performers, and art. LiveCity Yaletown is in Vancouver's ultra-trendy "boutique" neighbourhood - Yaletown. The site is on the water in beautiful David Lam Park. Here you'll enjoy local and international entertainment day and night, and a nightly closing show. For a full daily schedule for both LiveCity sites, click here.
O Zone It!
Richmond - a suburb of Vancouver just 15 minutes out of downtown (also home to Vancouver International Airport) is where you will find the O Zone.. which will definitely be a hub of celebration and excitement during the games. The O Zone is over 60 acres of fun to be had for all ages, and for free! Attractions will include massive ice art displays, outdoor skating (a true Canadian tradition), music (great headliners like Bedouin Soundclash and Our Lady Peace), art, international foods, fireworks, dancing and cool virtual reality games (take part in some Olympic competition yourself!) For a complete schedule of events and fun at the O Zone, click here.
I'll be back blogging in a week or so. Until then...LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
