Baltimore in Season
October 12 2009 by Claudia Kunkel
Fall is a great time of year to visit Baltimore and there is plenty to do to celebrate the season. Whether you are looking for fall festivals, autumn hikes or Victorian cemeteries you will find it in Baltimore and more.
Families will enjoy everything from apple or pumpkin picking to hayrides, straw mazes, fall crafts and petting zoos at several area farms including Baugher's Orchard & Farm, Spring Meadow Farm Fall Harvest Festival, Irvine Nature Center Pumpkin Fest and Weber's Cider Mill Farm. Most are open Saturday's and Sundays through October. Another seasonal favorite for families might be autumn hikes to take in the fall colors at Gunpowder Falls State Park, Oregon Ridge or Patapsco Valley State Park.
For those of you looking to get in the Halloween spirit, look no further than the seriously creepy Old Greenmount Cemetery. It is a large, imposing Victorian cemetery that is home to impressive monuments and headstones like you see in old horror movies.
If you prefer to stay among the living, try local favorites including the National Aquarium with interactive, hands-on learning opportunities, or the Baltimore Museum of Art, housing the world's largest holdings of artwork by Henri Matisse. History buffs will be interested in a trip to Fort McHenry where, in 1814 at the Battle of Baltimore, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write our national anthem. And, baseball fans won't want to miss a tour of Oriole Park at Camden Yards even if there is not a game scheduled.
To get a feel for the energy and vitality of the city, take a walk through the charming and historic Federal Hill business district where you will find cultural events, fine dining and nightlife all wrapped up with old-world charm. Nearby you can explore Baltimore's strong maritime history at the Baltimore Maritime Museum located in the charming Fells Point, home to unique shops, historic homes, restaurants and local theater. Another seaside favorite in Baltimore is a tall ship sailing cruise from Baltimore's Inner Harbor. If you are so inclined you can run through all of these charming neighborhoods if you participate in the Baltimore Running Festival on October 10!
