Growing up on the north shore of Long Island, in a town where sailing is as common as brushing your teeth, it's no surprise any kind of boating activity is on my top 10 favorite things to do and see. And the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Massachusetts is the ultimate location for the ultimate boating experience.
I attended my first Head of the Charles Regatta in 1991 when I was a student in Providence, Rhode Island. Dressed in my best fall attire and armed with warm coffee in my hand (Dunkin Donuts coffee of course), I headed to Cambridge to find the perfect spot along the banks of the Charles River to catch my first glimpse of the unprecedented talent on the water. Nestled against a breathtaking backdrop of Boston's historical cityscape peppered with glorious shades of gold and orange foliage, was the playing field that housed thousands of rowers. These teams were from high schools, colleges and rowing clubs across the country and from around the globe, gliding their boats along the glass-like river course with seemingly effortless strength and grace. I was in awe and immediately hooked. From then on, I knew the Head of the Charles Regatta would become an annual tradition for me and my family.
From October 23-24, 2010, more than 300,000 spectators will gather on the banks of the Charles River ready to root on the over 8,000 rowers from around the world competing in 55 different race events at the Head of the Charles Regatta. It's the world's largest two-day regatta event and has been a Boston tradition since 1965. It's a must see and do New England autumn event.
