London Summer Calendar

hampton-court-palace.jpgFor those of us lucky enough to get past the ever threatening cloud of volcanic ash and the British Airways strike, there is a lot to look forward to in London this summer.

My personal favorite is the Hampton Court Palace Festival in June. Picture a picnic in the Palace Gardens followed by an open air concert in the Palace courtyard. Nine big name artists perform during the 10 day festival and, as of this writing, there are still openings for the likes of Michael Bolton and classical British favorite, Katherine Jenkins, just to name a few.

Another must see event in mid June is the Trooping the Colour, the Queen's official birthday parade. You will see well over 1,000 officers marching or on horseback in addition to musicians and a drum corp. All is precisely timed and the Queen arrives in the Royal Procession to officially take the salute and inspect the guards.

If you love tennis, why not try to score a seat at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships? It may be too late to get Center Court seats but you should be able to see a match or two on one of the other courts and perhaps get a glimpse of one of your favorite players. I plan to keep my eyes peeled for Rafael Nadal.

Last Christmas I visited my daughter in London and she took me ice skating at Somerset House in the heart of London. The courtyard of this historic building made for a magical night and I have now learned that you can enjoy music in the same setting during the Somerset House Summer Series in mid July - sign me up!

Classical music lovers turn out in force for the BBC Proms Classical Music Festival at the Royal Albert Hall and other venues from mid July through mid September. On September 11, the last night of the festival, live outdoor concert venues are held all over the UK and will be linked up live to the Royal Albert Hall to participate in the closing festivities. The Proms in the Park events are extremely popular and everyone is encouraged to join in.

Given the rare opportunity to live in the UK for the next several months, I am going to try and get to most of these events. Let me know if you do the same.
