March Break at Disneyworld (or Disneyland)
January 25 2012 by Bryson Forbes
March break is fast approaching and last week I highlighted a few great ski vacation options for your consideration. Thanks to everyone who shared other great ski destinations and tips to help inspire a well-planned and enjoyable March break vacation.
This week I am considering a Disney vacation and here are my top 10 tips and tricks to get the most out of a March break at Disney.
1. Consider flying out of an airport in the United States. See my blog about cross border flying for those within an hour of a U.S. border airport. There are many benefits to this including saving money, time and aggravation.
2. Buy your tickets to Disney before you arrive at the park. This will ensure that you have your budget handled before you arrive and you won't waste time waiting in a line that doesn't end with a fun ride.
3. I recommend staying off property for a better deal. Best Western has a number of outstanding options very close to both Disneyworld in Lake Buena Vista, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. There are six great Best Western hotels all within walking distance of Disneyland in sunny California. You'll love the hotels, pools, free breakfast and the savings.
4. Once in the park, use "Fast Pass." March break is going to be busy and the lines for the best rides and attractions will likely be hours deep. A Fast Pass lets you make a "reservation" for a specified time and can cut your wait time significantly.
An insider tip: Don't worry about coming back at the specified times on the Fast Pass. Your Fast Pass will be accepted any time after the first listed time on the same day.
5. Pack light and bring what you need just for the day. Don't bring your passports, SLR camera and $1000 in cash.
6. Look for passes to exclusive park events. Last time we were there we bought tickets for a prince and princess party and it was terrific. Same park, same characters but even more up-close, fewer people and no lines!
7. Choose footwear based on comfort. You are going to walk miles and if you get a blister on day one, you're cooked. Don't even pack heels.
8. Pace yourself. There are other fun things to do in both Orlando and Anaheim. I have seen so many families hit Disney for a week and forget that the outside world exists. I find a visit to the park every other day works best with golf, sightseeing or a beach day in between. This has helped our family enjoy the next park day even more and helps prevent park fatigue.
9. Pack snacks. I recommend bringing a light knapsack with water, fruit and nuts. This will save you buckets of money and help quell hunger (and crabbiness) when you are in line.
10. Be in the moment and remember to have fun. I've seen plenty of adults at Disney who are tired, frustrated and cranky...me being one of them! Your kids are going to talk about this trip fondly for the rest of their lives, so try to enjoy it as much as humanly possible. Having fun is why we travel in the first place!
So good luck and let us know how it goes. Please feel free to share some of your Disney strategies.
