Ride Your Harley in Warmer Climes
December 7 2009 by Jason Fogelson
The weather is starting to turn, even here in sunny Southern California, where I call home. Even though temperatures are pleasant during the daytime, in the 60s and 70s, after the sun goes down I can expect 40s and 30s. It's hard to figure out what kind of gear to wear, what to carry, whether to ride or to take the car. I have to admit, there are times when I wimp out and ride in the cage, just to avoid the discomfort. I'm not proud of it. But it's the truth.
Which got me thinking - when it's getting colder here in the Northern Hemisphere, it's getting warmer down in the Southern Hemisphere. I started to do more than fantasize about locations below the Equator where I might like to ride.
It's not likely that I'm going to ship Manny, my 1993 Harley-Davidson Sportster, to a remote location. Luckily, as a member of the Harley Owners Group, I can take advantage of H.O.G. Fly & Ride, Harley's bike rental program. The Harley dealer in Sydney, Australia participates in the Fly & Ride, so I could rent an Electra Glide in Sydney for US$125 per day with a two-day minimum. Of course, I'd need a place to stay in Sydney. Where better than a Best Western? The Best Western Hotel Stellar has just undergone a multi-million dollar renovation, and it is in the heart of town. I can just picture riding past the Sydney Harbor, looking at the landmark Sydney Opera House, meeting Australians...
For a different kind of adventure, I dream of heading to Cape Town, South Africa. Harley-Davidson Cape Town has a fleet of over 20 bikes for rent, and can arrange the tour of a lifetime. The array of wildlife and natural beauty that I could see from the seat of a bike is mind-boggling. The beautiful Best Western Cape Suites Hotel would be an excellent home base for this trip.
Maybe I'll stick closer to home, and stay in the Northern Hemisphere after all. There are three Fly & Ride locations in Hawaii, one on Oahu, one on Maui and one on Kauai, and there are tons of Best Western Hotels scattered all over the islands. Fly & Ride in Hawaii costs $110 per day, a fantastically reasonable fee to ride a Harley-Davidson in paradise.
Don't freeze - ride where it's warm!
