Traveling Through Tough Times

And that is felt everywhere, including in the way we approach travel. But maybe these times provide an opportunity to think about our travel differently or at least take a different approach. Here are a few ideas for tackling travel in the midst of tougher times:

Make Loyalty Points Your Traveling Companions: Cash in points from air miles, credit cards and of course, Best Western Rewards points and use them to get discounts, vouchers and even free stuff for the trip. If you haven't jumped on the loyalty points bandwagon, now is a good time to start storing them up.

Plan Ahead: It never hurt to have to save. And with the down economy there are great deals available, you just have to be ready to pounce on them when they present themselves. Starting putting a little bit away every month...once you have a nest egg, things don't look scary.

Bring Your Friends: This may only apply to some, (I am married with kids and I usually don't vacation with my friends) but splitting hotel rooms, meals, and transportation costs can reduce the total travel burden. And who can put a price on bonding time.

Find the Unexpected Close to Home: It's amazing how many places in our backyards (figuratively) we have never experienced. Take the time to journey out on weekend trips and see those things that you always thought you should see, but never have. I think of it this way, in many cases there are people that travel hundreds or thousands of miles to experience something that many of us can reach in a days drive or less.
