Traveling with Cats

As a lifelong cat lover and owner, I've had to move/travel with cats on several occasions across the state and even across the country. While traveling in a car with a cat is significantly more nerve-racking than traveling with dogs, it doesn't have to be a traumatic experience. Below are some tips when you have to take your feline friend out and about:
- Prepare! Ensure you have all the necessary items in your car and ready before you actually put your cat in the car. Cat carrier, litter box, water and any other necessary items.
- Always use a cat carrier when traveling with your cat.
- Make sure kitty has a collar and up to date tag - this goes for all the time - not just when you travel. I highly recommend microchips as well. I've known many people who've lost their pet while traveling and those with microchips were always found and returned.
- If crossing a state or international border, make sure to carry copies of rabies vaccinations with you.
- Make frequent stops to let your cat out of the carrier to stretch, drink water and use the litter box. But remember, make sure all windows are rolled up and doors are closed when letting your cat out of the carrier.
- No food while traveling. Don't let your cat eat while riding in the car - but be sure to make stops at least every 7 to 8 hours to feed your cat.
- Bring something from your cat's home as a comfort item. If she has a favorite blanket, pillow, cat bed, etc., be sure to bring it along.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the article on traveling with cats. Enuff about the dogs already, it's nice to see someone write about traveling with cats! And it can be a challenge, but it's funny to watch cats acclimate to their 'new' hotel surroundings when I stop overnight on my travels. And we always travel with old sheets, which I put under their litter pan and on open space/floor which makes clean up much easier. Thanks again!
