While much of the East Coast of the US is digging out from under record snowfall, Daytona Beach, Florida is getting ready for the kickoff event for motorcycle season: Bike Week.
The 69th Annual Bike Week celebration in Daytona Beach will take place this year from February 26 – March 7, rain, shine or snowfall. If you haven’t already made your plans and reservations, you may not be completely out of luck yet. There are 11 Best Western Hotels within 50 miles of downtown Daytona Beach, and as of this writing, most still have rooms available during Bike Week. Check on the Best Western website , and you might just get lucky with a good room.
Bike Week has been a tradition in Daytona Beach since 1937. The celebration coincides with the running of the Daytona 200, an American Motorcycling Association sanctioned professional race at the Daytona International Speedway. The event used to center on the racing, but it has long since outgrown the competition. In fact, most people who attend Bike Week nowadays never even go to the races, which is a shame. AMA motorcycle racing is a very exciting, highly technical and addictive spectator sport.
But, then again, so is people watching. And Bike Week is all about the people, and the fun. Live bands, great food and drink, parties, vendors and tomfoolery abound all around Volusia County.
And riding. Don’t forget motorcycle riding! There’s a great, classic Florida motorcycle ride called “The Loop” that traverses coastal drives, river shores, state parks and country lanes, giving a great, relaxed view of the natural beauty of the area.
Harley-Davidson will be a major presence at Bike Week again this year, as an official corporate sponsor. The demo squad will be on hand with the latest 2010 bikes, available for test rides for licensed motorcyclists with proper equipment. It’s a great chance to ride that Electra Glide you’ve been dreaming about all winter.
So, thaw out your riding gear, and book a trip to Bike Week. Kick off motorcycle season with a few thousand of your friends, and make 2010 a great year of riding.
