July 1st marks the 142nd birthday of our great nation and for you a great chance for a short, fun getaway. This year Canada Day falls on Wednesday, at first blush this seems kind of disappointing, but if you reframe it, it provides a perfect chance to get a five-day mini-holiday and only cost you two days vacation.
There is no shortage of first class events planned to celebrate Canada’s birthday. Every city and town in each province will have a party planned and most should have details available online. Do some research, look for the nearest Best Western and have some fun on Canada Day.
My favourite celebration takes place in my hometown of Ottawa. Every year as a kid, one of the biggest highlights of the year was the Canada Day firework show on Parliament Hill. It held a symbolic meaning for me that school was out and summer was upon us. If you have never been in Ottawa for July 1st, you have to go. Here is what they have planned this year.
The nation’s capital has tremendous pressure to lead the pack on Canada Day and they rarely disappoint. Hundreds of thousands of people hit downtown Ottawa each year and there is a full day of activities planned. For the runners, the party kicks-off at 8:00 a.m. with a five kilometre run. At 10:30 a.m. the RCMP musical ride is a must see. This event with the traditional scarlet uniforms and majestic horses is memorable experience at any age.
Unique to this year, there are a number of events throughout the day designed to get people ready and excited for the Olympics being held in Vancouver in February. If it’s live music you want, Sarah McLachlan and The Canadian tenors headline a long list of performers that will play on Parliament Hill prior to the Fireworks Show which is scheduled for 10 p.m. For a list of all the events in Ottawa, click:
