Most Americans take St. Patrick’s day for all its worth, wearing green on that special day, pinching friends who aren’t wearing green, eating corned beef and cabbage and drinking a green beer at the local pub. Something to consider is how the real Irish spend their favorite national holiday, and the answer is very enthusiastically.
From March 16th through the 20th, Dublin hosts the annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival which is filled to the brim with excitement and fun for all ages. Attendees will find cultural events such as Irish dancing, art galleries, comedy shows, musical performances and plenty of food! This official festival was started by the government of Ireland in 1995 as a means to showcase Irish culture and its charismatic people. Since then it has become a national and international event where people travel from across the world to participate. Preparation of the festival takes as long as 18 months and garners up to 2 million visitors in a span of 5 days. All participants are encouraged to dress festively, participate in any games and shows possible, and bring their family for the children’s attractions as well. The pride that the Irish have around this national holiday as well as the festival is immeasurable, and the entire city of Dublin is encouraged to participate in this special time. One example of a city-wide contribution is the “Greening the City” movement in which businesses and residents are asked to turn their lights green for a captivating green glow to illuminate during the festival.
