Make your next adventure easier and read these tips to make the entire ride enjoyable for you and the kids.

Stop Often

Pull over at a rest stop at least once an hour for kids to use the restroom, collect souvenirs and run around before jumping back in the car. This is a good way for the kids to get their wiggles out so they can relax while you drive.

Switch Places

For families with little ones, consider putting an adult in the backseat for some of the ride. Switch often with your driving partner, preferably at each pit stop. This allows each adult valuable one-on-one time with the kids while preventing tantrums due to boredom.

Plan a Lot of Activities

Relying on a tablet, utilizing built-in televisions or handing over a phone is a good time waster for the first part of the trip. But come prepared with activities after the kids get bored, such as puzzle books, magnet games and coloring books. Be ready to engage in a game of I Spy or 20 Questions.

Include the Kids in the Planning Process

Allow your kids to be involved with the planning process by showing them a paper map or the route online. Let them pick out special destinations to stop at along the way. This gets the kids excited about the trip while motivating good behavior.

Pack Plenty of Snacks

Snacks are an excellent distraction on road trips and an easy way to keep the kiddos happy. Dole out healthy foods every 15 or 30 minutes to keep them occupied while teaching them how to track time. For extended periods of good behavior, reward them with a favorite treat.

Prep the Car

As you prepare for your road trip, it’s easy to overlook the most important part: the car. De-stress your journey by preparing your car while preparing the kids. Before your family heads out, do a thorough cleaning, have the car serviced and check your roadside assistance membership.

Take time to relax and enjoy each other’s company while you travel. While you plan your vacation, book each night at Best Western Hotels & Resorts. Each room has extra space for storage and many locations include a pool or gym for the kids to get their extra energy out before bedtime. In the morning, eat a delicious breakfast together before continuing your journey!
