A Soup Spoon Vs The Center of the Earth

iStock_000016031396XSmall.jpgI remember in my younger years, thinking that if I could dig a hole all the way to China and jump through it, I would fall all the way through and end up standing on my head. You know, because it's on the other side of the world and, obviously, that's how gravity works. Well, when I was about 8 years old I decided to try it - I'm sure you did too when you were a kid.

I set out, soup spoon in hand, to dig from my grandparents' front yard all the way to China. I started digging and digging and digging and got about a foot deep before I gave up and realized that I would need something much bigger than a soup spoon if I was going to dig all the way to China. I decided my grandpa wouldn't mind if I borrowed his shovel - especially for an adventure of this magnitude. So, after equipping myself with the shovel I found in his shed, I was hit with another wave of inspiration and went back to work. I got another few feet and slowly began to lose that inspiration - midday in the summer time in Mississippi will do that to you. I put the shovel away and vowed to one day finish digging to China.

Then I grew up a bit and soon realized that digging a hole to China wasn't actually possible - something about the "layers of the Earth" and something called the "core". Apparently the layers can be really hard, and the core can be really hot. I was so disappointed. Now that I'm a bit older I realize what a childish endeavor digging a hole to China really is. I mean, there aren't any Best Westerns inside the Earth - where would I sleep after a long day of digging? Who would make me breakfast? Luckily, however, there are dozens of Best Western hotels in China. So, once I figure out how to actually get there, I'm set.
