Daytona Beach Bike Week 2012

iStock_000003119442XSmall.jpgGentlemen, start your engines! Even though this winter has been very mild throughout much of the United States, it's always great to see the first signs of spring. For me, spring means Daytona Beach Bike Week, and this year that's March 9 to 18. Actually, that's more than a week -- it's 10 days. But who's counting?

Every year since 1937 (that's 75 years), Bike Week has been held in Daytona Beach, Florida, coinciding with the Daytona 200 motorcycle race. The race was suspended for a few years during World War II, but the party continued. The Daytona 200 is held at Daytona International Speedway on March 17, and is the first race of the AMA Pro Racing season. Tickets for the race start at $30, a bargain for a great day of racing.

Bike Week is about so much more than racing. It's a celebration of the motorcycle and the motorcycle lifestyle. Riders from across the country and around the world gather to show off their bikes, their riding gear and themselves. Bar upon bar feature band upon band, and the streets roar with engine noise. Vendors hawk riding gear, t-shirts, memorabilia and motorcycle-related products. Main Street becomes a carnival, and fun rules. Bike Week is generally an adults-only playground, not really the kind of place you'd want to bring the kids or the faint of heart.

Harley-Davidson is a big part of Bike Week, and Harley-Davidson Insurance is one of the event's major sponsors. The Motor Company brings out all the bells and whistles to the Speedway, including a HOG Pin Stop, 2012 model demo rides, the Harley-Davidson Fit Shop display and much more. Every day at Riverfront Park on Beach Street, H-D shows off the latest Parts and Accessories along with a display about H-D1 Factory Customization and another HOG Pin Stop. There's a special women's area, featuring bike lift seminars and the interactive Jump Start motorcycle experience. The 5th Annual H-D MDA Women's Ride Daytona starts off from the Harley area on Tuesday, March 13, and the Harley-Davidson Ride-In Custom Bike Show takes place on March 14. Riverfront Park promises to be the heart of Bike Week again this year.

The BEST WESTERN PLUS Aku Tiki Inn is newly renovated, and conveniently close to Beach Street and the Speedway, and there are at least 9 other BEST WESTERN Hotels within a 50-mile radius of Daytona Beach. Finding a room at the last minute is difficult, but not impossible at BestWestern.com. It will certainly be worth the effort, when the result is Daytona Beach Bike Week 2012!
