Laptop Theft On The Rise
June 20 2012 by Chris McGinnis
As soon as I finish this post, I know what I'm going to do: back up my laptop data!
That's because June and July--when more Americans are on the road than at other times of year-- are peak months for laptop theft.
After analyzing 13,818 theft investigations, Absolute Software, a computer theft-recovery service, found that laptop theft is most likely in Chicago, Houston or Detroit.
When it comes to having your laptop lifted at airports, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International leads, followed by Miami International, Chicago-O'Hare, Orlando and San Francisco International. Among international airports, Frankfurt topped the list.
You can avoid having your laptop snatched by simply paying more attention to your surroundings. "Airport computer theft can be the result of carelessness on the part of the device owner where they leave their computer unattended, providing a perfect crime of opportunity," says Absolute's Computer Theft Report. Most laptop thefts occurred in airport luggage or storage areas... but surprisingly, 18% happened on the plane!
The company also revealed that it has seen, "extremely well organized rings where multiple criminals work together to distract the device owner and ultimately steal their computer from under their nose. And some of our investigations have led to the arrest of airport employees who use their insider position to take advantage of travelers, stealing computers and reselling them for profit."
Okay, now it's time to back up!
