Polar Vortex

canada weather 2014.jpgOne absolute truth about Canadians is that we love to talk about the weather. In the winter, we commiserate about the cold and then a mere six months later can be found huddled around the air conditioning unit disturbed by the latest heat wave.

In my four plus decades of this patriotic ritual I have never heard about a "polar vortex". In fact when I first heard the term, my initial thought was "Sounds cool, is it available on Netflix?" Apparently not yet!

According to Wikipedia a polar vortex is a persistent, large-scale cyclone located near either of a planet's geographical poles. They surround the polar highs and lie in the wake of the polar front. These cold-core low-pressure areas strengthen in the winter and weaken in the summer due to their reliance upon the temperature differential between the equator and the poles. It's also apparently not a new term; they were first discovered way back in 1853!

According to yours truly, a polar vortex is pure evil and make things ridiculously cold. As I write this blog, outside it is snowing, (again) and although pretty, the annoying sound coming from across the street as my neighbour runs his snow blower (again) is a reminder of the fact I still need to shovel. As an aside the only people I know in Canada who are enjoying the polar vortex are those who bought or received a snow blower this season. Everyone else considers this term quite offensive.

Travel and tourism across Canada is also quite fed up with the weather this season, numerous flight delays and cancellations have caused havoc right across the country. The silver lining though is pent of demand and impending joy we will feel once we survive this winter. During one of my recent weather venting sessions, a lady told me that she is going to literally slap the first person this year that complains about the heat. Although dramatic I think her statement speaks to how Canada is going to embrace the Spring in 2014 and I will be shocked if we don't set records this summer with everyone out and about enjoying our great outdoors!

Have you ever heard the term "Polar Vortex" before this year? What are you going to do to enjoy every second of summer 2014?

I have never heard the term 'polar vortex' before. Although I respect the validity of the phenomenon I think that the media is using the term to make the temperatures and weather that we are experiencing this winter sound more dramatic.

I feel like good air conditioning is super important to have. Especially in Wheeling, IL! Are you very familiar with this website: www.discountheating.net. I just want to know if they are reliable...
