Something To Live By
June 6 2012 by Claudia Kunkel
What do all 50 states as well as the ten provinces of Canada have in common that also make each unique? They all have a motto, many of which are abstract, but others that today live up to the short phrase coined years ago. Canada's motto, A Mari Usque Ad Mare means "From Sea to Sea," and the United States of America's E Pluribus Unum is translated to be, "Out of Many, One."
When each of these states, provinces or countries were formed, their motto was chosen to formally describe the general motivation or intention of that particular territory of land. There are many mottos that are completely ambiguous, but others that do a great job of describing the experience there. Here are five favorites who live by their mottos that I really love to visit:
Michigan
Michigan's motto is Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice or "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you." What better way to invite visitors to your state? While Michiganders don't subscribe to a motto that is exactly like everyone else's, they really demonstrate that they live in a place that they love and that you'll probably love it too.
Ontario
The Canadian province of Ontario demonstrates the intent to always be faithful. Ut incepit fidelis sic permanent or "Loyal she began and loyal she remains." Ontario is sure to be just as great every time you return- there's nothing better than consistency.
Arizona
This Southwest paradise has a very simple two-word motto, Diat Deus or "God enriches." It's easy to see that something special must be happening for so many people and so many vacationers to enjoy themselves in the middle of a hot desert. You'll probably love this enriched land too.
California
For many, during the Gold Rush of 1849, it was a feat to make it all the way to California to be a part of what was sure to be a new, prosperous life. This state, well-known for a wide array of things to do, has a motto of Eureka which translated translates to be "I have found it." If you visit California, you will see that you have found it. There is no place that compares anywhere else in the world.
Texas
Finally, my favorite state motto is from the great state of Texas- Friendship. Leave it to the Lone Star State to not only have an English motto, but to only have one powerful word. Things may be bigger in Texas, but nothing is as big as the hearts of the people that will show you southern hospitality like no other.
