motorcycle event.jpgI made a New Year's Resolution this year to plan ahead, and to not miss great motorcycling events. Here's a list of some of the biggest bike events and rallies coming up for this year. It's not too early to start planning now! I'm going to visit BestWestern.com to start booking my hotel rooms before it's too late.

March 8 - 17: Bike Week 2013, Daytona Beach, FL
The kickoff event of the motorcycling year. Thaw out your bike and ride on down!

March 16: The Daytona 200, Daytona, FL
You don't have to be a racing fan to appreciate the skill on display at the Daytona 200. Inspiration to improve your riding skills.

April 10 -14: Arizona Bike Week, Mesa, AZ
This one gets bigger every year. How big? Charlie Hunnam ("Jax" from Sons of Anarchy) is making a special appearance on the 14th. That's big.

April 24 - 28: Laughlin River Run, Laughlin, NV
Laughlin doesn't get the attention that Las Vegas gets as a gaming and entertainment venue, but it certainly takes the spotlight during this rally.

May 26: Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom, Washington, DC
This annual ride through our nation's capital is designed to bring attention to POW/MIA issues. 2013 marks the 26th year for the charity event, which raises awareness, funds and pulse rates.

June 4 - 8: Americade, Lake George, NY
The world's biggest all-brand touring rally gathers on the shores of beautiful Lake George. Not only is Americade friendly to all brands, it's also family-friendly and the most safety-conscious of all rallies.

June 8 - 16: Laconia Motorcycle Week, Laconia, NH
America's oldest motorcycle rally returns for its 90th edition this year, and it promises to be a blowout. Send the kids home after Americade, and ride over to New Hampshire for a real good time.

June 8 -16: Mother Road Ride Rally, Willowbrook, IL
Riders from around the world fantasize about riding Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. Here's a chance to join the 19th annual Rally along the 2,448-mile route.

July 19 - 21: AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, Lexington, OH
This one is on my bucket list. I hope to make it here this year, finally. Real vintage bikes from all eras racing around Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, many piloted by vintage motorcycle racers.

July 19 - 21: Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey, CA
This race has become known as "MotoGP Weekend" on the California Coast. Thousands of motorcyclists converge on the tony Monterey Peninsula, where America's most beautiful racetrack hosts the world's best riders for a weekend of exciting competition.

August 5 - 11: Sturgis Rally and Races, Sturgis, SD
When motorcyclists talk about going to Sturgis, this is what they mean. The tiny town of Sturgis, South Dakota is the center of the Harley-Davidson universe for one week every August. This year marks the 73rd rally -- will you be there?

August 29 - September 1: Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary Celebration & H.O.G. 30th, Milwaukee, WI
Harley-Davidson loves to celebrate milestones, and there aren't many bigger in the world of motorcycling. The fact that the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) hits a big birthday at the same time should make for a great big party this year.

October 3 - 6: Las Vegas BikerFest, Las Vegas, NV
Do you really need an excuse to go to Las Vegas? Okay, here's a good one. Add thousands of motorcycles to the already heady mix of gaming, entertainment, dining and great weather, and you've got a recipe for a great weekend.

October 20: Love Ride, Glendale to Castaic, CA
The 30th running of the Love Ride combines a motorcycle rally, charity fundraiser, vendor fair and concert into one day-long event. Expect to see a constellation of celebrity motorcyclists along the route.

October 17 - 20: Biketoberfest, Daytona Beach, FL
Close out the riding season with one last warm weather rally. Now in its 21st year, Biketoberfest has grown to be a more manageable version of Bike Week, but still plenty fun and exciting.

    Trip to Promote My Book

In April 2012 I published my book, Memories of Jack Pickup, Flying Doctor of British Columbia. In early October, I took a trip to Cowichan/Duncan/Victoria where I stayed in the Cowichan Best Western Plus Hotel. My stay was wonderful. I enjoyed the Wifi service and the delicious meals in the restaurant. The room was very comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. While there, I did research at the Museum archives on my late husband's activities in Duncan where he was a prominent citizen in the 1970s and 80s. I will definitely go there again.
