2010 Predictions
October 22 2009 by Bryson Forbes
With just more than two months left in 2009, its time to look ahead to 2010 and make some predictions about the future. Will the Leafs win their first Stanley Cup in more than 40 years? Will we see a federal election in Canada? Will our economy turn the corner quickly and recover from a tough 2009? Aside from the Leafs winning the cup, the other two are a great source for debate, but here are a few personal predictions for the travel industry:
- The Olympic Effect. The Vancouver Olympics will be a resounding success and accomplish a number of wonderful things; it will serve as the perfect excuse to transition economically from bad times to good. It will act as a catalyst to improve consumer confidence and boost spending. The Olympics also will highlight the beauty of Canada and its west coast, helping tourism in the second half of 2010.
- Record number of Canadians heading to the U.S. this winter. The Canadian dollar will surpass $1.10 against the U.S. dollar early in 2010 and stay relatively high. This will certainly affect exports of goods and services but also will change travel patterns. With a strong dollar and a cold winter, Canadians will be escaping south in droves.
- More Canadians with passports. Passport legislation will change, making Canadian passports valid for 10 years instead of five. With a smooth process and only minor complaints about the increased price, a record number of Canadians will have a valid passport on December 31, 2010.
- Dropping airport costs. Canada, in an attempt to increase inbound and domestic tourism, will continue to lower airport fees and taxes. Air Canada will benefit greatly and with relatively low fuel costs, a strong currency, decreased taxes and improving demand, they will have their best year of the last 10.
- Road trips for summer. After a dismal summer in 2009, a much better May and June will kick start a glorious summer. Road trips will be all the rage as much overdue sunny and warm weather will turn Canadians into weekend warriors again. Hotels and tourist attractions will see traffic skyrocket after 18 months of tough sledding.
