A Rider's Resolutions
January 7 2010 by Jason Fogelson
I actually really do believe in New Year's resolutions. I don't believe in driving myself nuts over them, but I do believe that setting some goals for the coming year can help to focus my efforts and can help me make decisions when I'm not sure which way to turn.
One area of my life where I make resolutions has to do with my motorcycle riding. Here's a list of some of my Rider's Resolutions for 2010:
- I resolve to wear all of the gear, all of the time. I will not take shortcuts with safety.
- I resolve to keep my bike clean and polished. A clean bike is a happy bike.
- I resolve to perform my routine maintenance on a regular schedule. I will change my oil and filters, check my fittings and cables, and re-torque all nuts and bolts to spec.
- I resolve to check my tire pressure before each ride, and at the beginning of the each day on a multi-day trip.
- I resolve to ride my own motorcycle at least once each week, even when I have other bikes in the garage. I will not let my motorcycle sit idle.
- I resolve to connect my battery to a smart charger every time I park in my garage.
- I resolve to cover my motorcycle every time I park in my garage. A covered motorcycle will collect less dust and will be somewhat protected from scratching and nicking.
- I resolve to carry a lock and chain with me on every ride, and to lock my motorcycle to a stationary object every time I park, even for a few minutes. An unlocked, unsecured bike is easy pickings for a thief with a van or pickup truck, and a good quality lock can help deter the casual crook.
- I resolve to stay at rider friendly hotels, like the ones that participate in the Best Western Rider Friendly program, when I travel, and to let the staff at the hotel know how much I appreciate the program. I remember when riding a motorcycle meant forgoing nice hotels, but that's a thing of the past now.
- I resolve to respect the road and other riders, and to ride safely and soberly, whether I'm on my motorcycle or in my car.
- I resolve to have a blast, to treasure every ride, to vault my memories and to share my rides with you.
I hope that you will resolve to keep reading this website for travel ideas and advice, and that you have a fantastic 2010.
