Agony of the Chase

September 17 2009 by Mark Deyer

race-car-wr.jpgThis 2009 NASCAR season has been anything but predictable. With the start of the Chase beginning this Saturday, many of us are still trying to figure out what has been the biggest surprise of the season.

Tony Stewart, backed by his own team and dollars at Stewart-Haas Racing, put up a storybook season to date and leads all drivers in points going into The Chase. Tony's three wins and 18 Top-10 finishes have made his departure from Joe Gibbs racing a distant and forgettable memory.

Everyone's favorite villain Kyle Busch couldn't muster enough points to crack the Top-12 to make a run at the Sprint Cup championship. Kyle's 4 wins this season is the most of any driver who missed The Chase, but a string of poor runs late in races leaves him out yet again.

Even fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. finds himself on the outside looking in. Jr.'s meager supply of Top-5 and Top-10 finishes stands out as a stark disappointment while his Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Mark Martin all find themselves competitive in The Chase.

For my money, though, one of the biggest surprises of the season has been Best Western Racing driver David Reutimann who made gigantic leaps of progress this season by landing himself 15th in points going into The Chase. David notched his first Sprint Cup victory this season at the Coca-Cola 600 and showed remarkable consistency with eight Top-10 finishes. David also managed to race his way to 2 poles this season. His marked improvement in 2009 gets all of us here at Best Western excited for what the #00 team will be able to accomplish in the 2010 season.
September has two great races to coming up if you are in the New England area. September 20th is the Sylvania 300 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, and September 28th is the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway in Dover,.

Buckle up, this is going to be an exciting finish.
