Decorate Your Garage

April 26 2010 by Jason Fogelson

organized-garage.jpgYou've spent a lot of time setting up your garage. You've cleared out the clutter. You've arranged your tools. You've stowed your gear in a convenient, secure spot. You've made space for your motorcycle(s). Everything's perfectly functional.

Now it's time to have some fun. It's time to decorate your garage.

I'm a form-follows-function kind of guy, but I'm not beyond a little pure décor every once in a while. A cool looking garage space will be a more pleasant place to work on your bike, and you'll be more likely to spend time doing the maintenance that your bike craves if you have a nice environment to do it in.

Before you go nuts hanging curtains and valences in your garage window, allow me to offer a few guidelines for garage design.

Consider starting with a theme or color palette. Let your bike be the star. If you're lucky enough to own a Harley-Davidson, you might consider the company's official colors, orange and black, as the basis for your design. Most other manufacturers are identified with their own colors, like Honda's red and Kawasaki's Green. If you're into motorcycle racing, consider the colors of your favorite racing team.

Don't forget the floor. There's nothing more depressing than an oil-stained bare concrete floor, and it's easy to remedy. I used special epoxy paint on my garage floor, and I added silica particles to make it less slippery. My floor looks crisp, is easy to keep clean, and is nearly impervious to damage. Another option is a modular floor tiling system like EuroTread , a great choice if you don't want to make any permanent changes to your floor.

Look up. Many garages have unfinished ceilings with exposed rafters. The rafters are a great place to tuck away or hang cool-looking parts, signs and motorcycle memorabilia. When you're down on the floor, struggling to tighten that tricky fastener, think about items that will bring a smile to your face when they catch your eye up in the rafters.

Check out the great selection of home and collectable items at the Harley-Davidson website. I also love the functional and decorative stuff that they sell at California Car Cover and Griot's Garage .

Don't overdo it. A few carefully selected items, thoughtfully displayed, will have more impact than a ton of junk scattered around your space. Less is more.
