Endurance Adventures

November 21 2008 by Neal Mueller

Last week a 10-year old boy in Minnesota wrote me an email and asked, "what adventures are there?" Kids always ask the best questions, and his question really got me thinking. I decided to compile a list of endurance adventures. There are just so many cool things to do out there, check it out...

7 Summits - climb the tallest mountain on every continent including Mount Everest

Peak and pond - climb Mount Everest and swim English Channel. Done by 3 people, never done by American.

Eight-thousanders - climb the 14 mountains in the world that exceed 8000 meters

Explorers Grand Slam - climb the 7 summits and reach both the south and north poles

High pointers - climb highest peak in each of 50 American states

Second seven summits - climb second tallest mountain on every continent

Ocean's Seven - swim open water swimming's version of the 7 Summits

Endurance adventures.jpgEnglish Channel - swim 22 miles from England to France (or vice-versa)

Manhattan Island Marathon Swim - swim 28.5 miles around Manhattan

Ironman - swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, run 26.2

10 Degrees Latitude - swim, kayak and bike 10 degrees of latitude on seven continents (disclosure: this is my current adventure and passion)

Ultramarathons - run more than a marathon distance (commonly 50+ miles). The best known ultramarathon is Marathon des Salbes; a 156 mile foot race across the Moroccan desert.

Rogaining - run, bike, kayak, climb and orienteer cross-country, often 24-hours in duration

Thru-hiking - hike a long-distance trail from end to end, such as the 2175 mile long Appalachian Trail

Circumnavigation - sail around the world, most mighty if done alone
Side note: there are many other notable non-endurance adventures that I did not cover here, such as wing suiting or skyscraper tightrope walking. My list focused on adventures of human endurance.

If you know other endurance adventures, let us know and add them to the list.
