Father-Song-Fishing.jpgPity the dad who opens his Father's Day gift to find a pinstripe shirt or a box of golf balls. Why not surprise the man of the house with a weekend getaway the entire family can enjoy? Here are a few ideas for travel adventures geared to dad.

Catch a fish on Idaho's Salmon River
Riggins lies deep in a canyon at the confluence of the Salmon River and the Little Salmon River in west central Idaho. It's a hub for outdoor adventure and you'll find a myriad of outfitters. You can cast for steelhead or sturgeon or hop in a raft for white-water thrills. Or, take a hike in nearby Hells Canyon Recreation Area.

Dig for dinosaur bones in Wyoming
Thermopolis in central Wyoming is home to the largest dinosaur museum in the country, the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. You and dad can actually go out with a paleontologist and dig for bones. Afterward, head for downtown lined with cowboy bars and old-timey restaurants serving buffalo meat (Safari Club is a favorite). Other attractions include Hot Springs State Park and the Dancing Bear Folk Center with a 5,000-piece collection of barbed wire.

Ride roller-coasters in Ohio
Cedar Point amusement park on the Lake Erie Peninsula in Sandusky (50 miles west of Cleveland) earns its name as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World with 17 heart stoppers. The 420-foot-tall Top Thrill Dragster clocks in at 120 mph - a speed that will definitely have dad saying, "Wow!" Other nearby activities include boating, fishing, and swimming on nearby Lake Erie.

Sail into the sunset in Connecticut
The ritzy little town of Westport sits right on Long Island Sound. You can browse the quaint downtown's art galleries or catch a play at the renowned Westport Country Playhouse--but dad might be happiest out at sea sailing on a boat. The Longshore Sailing School is among the oldest sailing programs in the country, and you don't have to live in town to rent a boat or take a lesson from this institution. Other nearby activities include bicycling, golf, horseback riding, jet skiing, sailing, scuba diving, swimming and snorkeling.
