Revised: 5 Most Important Things to Pack

August 3 2009 by Bryson Forbes

babyblanket.jpgYou may have caught my recent blog about the five most important things to pack for any getaway. I am writing now to correct myself and add one thing to the list that any good husband and father should never forget.

That item is whatever the last thing your significant other tells you to pack. No matter how trivial or seemingly unimportant you may feel it is as you try to configure the space in your car trunk. Learn from my mistake and just make the room.

Last week that item was extra blankets for the kids. As my wife Ruth reminded me, you can never tell how the Canadian weather will hold up - it can change on at the drop off a hat. We were headed for our annual retreat to Red Pine Camp on the south eastern tip of Algonquin Park on Golden Lake. I realize that sounds made up, but I kid you not, I am actually a shareholder and my extended family has been visiting on and off dating back to the 1920's.

Back to the blankets - I felt like I had just conquered the challenging pack when Ruth suggested that extra blankets might be a good idea for the kids. I let Ruth know that I had triple-checked the local weather forecast (in a related story I am downgrading my rating of the Weather Eye iPhone Application from 4 stars to 0) and that things looked splendid, warm and sunny all week. So the blankets were not added to our already loaded car. I should have thought about the summer we have been having in eastern Canada - cool and rainy most of the time, not really much of a summer at all. Plus, don't all good Canadians know that a winter chill is never far behind you, especially when you least expect it?

To cut to the chase, the third night the temperature dropped to nine degrees Celsius (roughly forty-eight degrees Fahrenheit for my American friends) and those blankets would have come in handy. The kids were cold, the adults were cold, and the reception to the fact I hadn't brought extra blankets was cold. A chilly night both in the cabin and in the doghouse my friends.

Please revise my previous list of "most important things to pack" from five to six items. Does anyone have any similar stories that humbled you quickly?
