Riding the Web
June 27 2009 by Jason Fogelson
We can't be on our bikes all of the time. In fact, you're in front of your computer right now, aren't you?
The website has replaced the workbench as the prime location for exchanging motorcycle stories, travel tales and bike knowledge. Think of your computer as an extension of your garage - a place to work on your bike, hang around with friends and waste a lot of time chatting about trips you want to take on your motorcycle.
I tend to spend a lot of time at the Harley-Davidson website (http://harley-davidson.com). Not only can I drool over the latest bikes and ponder the specifications, I can shop for accessories and Motor Clothes. I can also pay a virtual visit to the Harley-Davidson Museum, and keep up on H-D news.
I also visit the Harley-Owners Group site (http://hog.com) for the great members-only forum and information about HOG events and competitions. I also use the Ride Planner on the HOG site. I can find great rides, and find the Best Western Hotels along the way before I ever leave my desk.
Of course, I visit the Best Western Hotels (http://bestwestern.com) site before I travel. I also visit frequently just to check on the special offers and internet only rates. Sometimes, a trip can emerge based on a great hotel rate. Any excuse for a ride, right?
When I want to keep up on motorcycle news and reviews, I have a few favorite sources. About.com's Motorcycles site (http://motorcycles.about.com) has a great range of coverage, an active forum and some excellent reviews. Actually, I sometimes review motorcycles for the site. Hmm, maybe that's why I go there so often.
I visit the websites for a few of my favorite motorcycle magazines, in particular Motorcycle Consumer News (http://www.mcnews.com), Rider (http://www.ridermagazine.com), Motorcyclist (http://motorcyclistonline.com) and Cycle World (http://www.cycleworld.com), each of which have great, searchable archives of bike and gear reviews.
I really enjoy the mental part of motorcycling, so I read about riding skills and safety. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (http://www.msf-usa.org/) is a great resource. I frequently check in on Stayin' Safe (http://www.stayinsafe.com/), a rider training program that posts great articles and videos.
I have also set up an RSS feed for "motorcycles" and "Harley" on my Twitter account, so that whenever those keywords show up in someone's tweets, they automatically get sent to my browser. I'm still working on refining this search to separate the wheat from the chaff, but I've read some fascinating tweets and now follow some very cool tweeps. I've even joined a motorcycling twibe.
Finally, when words are just too much, I visit Bike Pics (http://www.bikepics.com) and ogle the cool motorcycle photography submitted by members. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this site is worth millions.
