School's Out for Summer

Overall, as we recently heard at the Leisure Travel Summit held in Toronto, leisure travel and optimism is back in a big way this year. The result is an action packed summer full of fun, adventure and new experiences.

Here are my top 5 things to do with the kids this summer:

1. A good old fashion road trip

What a great time to get in the car and just go! The notion congers up memories of my childhood, seeing new things, wishing for air conditioning, but mostly making memories. I am recommending a three night, three city getaway as a perfect summer road trip. Do it between now and August 14th and you can earn a FREE NIGHT voucher with Best Western. We are planning to travel through South Western Ontario in late July! Can't wait.

2. A picnic

There is also something nostalgic about packing up a picnic cooler full of food and spending a day in a park or at the beach. We have plans to hook up with another family and head over via ferry to Centre Island in Toronto for the day. It's a great way to unwind and eating on a blanket always makes me feel like a kid again!

3. An Amusement Park

On August the 8th we are going to Canada's Wonderland with friends who are visiting from Ottawa. (Look for the blog in mid-August). Personally I am not a big fan of rollercoasters but I am happy to watch! The carnival atmosphere really pulls me in. It is always such a happy place; you rarely see someone in a bad mood at an amusement park!

4. Introduce a new sport

This summer my son is playing t-ball for the first time and it has been such a delight to watch a group of six year olds learn the basics of baseball. He is also going to a week long camp that focuses on tennis and golf. There are so many powerful lessons and building blocks that sports can provide. My advice to all parents is to try to find a sport that your kids can latch onto. It is rarely the first one you introduce, but to see them get engaged is truly fulfilling.

5. A local festival

Another great idea for a summer road trip; find a local festival and make a plan. My personal favourite is the world's biggest Elvis Festival held in Collingwood, Ontario about an hour north of Toronto. The event is held July 21-24 and is so much fun. There are two Best Western hotels nearby, but better book now, there will be hundreds of Elvis' in the building and they all need a place to stay!

Let me know what you have planned with the family this summer. See you on the road and safe travels!
