Summertime Workouts - Four Quirky Routines

July 7 2010 by Casey Bower

chair-handstand.jpgWhere I live, the summer time is hot, real hot, so hot that it drains the motivation right out of you and all that you want to do is hide in a dark room with the AC on high...

Summer time for me is always a last ditch effort to get back into shape so that when I don the board shorts at the pool and on my vacations not everyone will run away. So, my conundrum right now is how do I stay in shape during this 110 degree weather...

I've decided to share with you 4 items from my secret plan to retreat into my air conditioned lair for the next couple weeks and then emerge pumped up and ready to flex. (or something like that)

Yoga: If you have never done a sun salutation, check these out, they are deceivingly intense... starting your days off with some of these will create inner harmony and an outer "hardbody."

Commercial Crunches: Do you love TV? Cool. Watch it all day long, just make yourself a deal... You will do crunches or pushups during every commercial break.

Handstands: You think I'm kidding, but these things are fun and will rip your arms and core to shreds... Plus why stand on your feet when you can stand on your hands? Quick tip, find a wall and start out doing your handstands up against the wall unless you are a former gymnast or a monkey.

Tread Water: Ok, so this one doesn't take place inside, but it is simple and you can find a pool and do this at night. Find the deep end, look at the clock, and start treading water... keep it up for as long as you can. Wanna get crazy, just use your legs and hold your arms out of the water or just use your arms and let your legs dangle.

There are four summer workouts you would probably never have considered. Now, I bid you adieu as I retreat into my cave to do some handstands, sun salutations, and crunches while I watch TV. (I wonder what my neighbors think when they see this going on?)
