The Top Five Must-Attend Canadian Sporting Events

About a year ago, my good friend Bruce announced that he and his wife had officially created their "bucket list". Ever since the movie by the same name came out, people everywhere seem to be taking note of the things they must do before they die. Lucky for me, I see Bruce once a week for our old-timers hockey and rarely a week goes by without some mention of the list. Last week, however, it led to a great discussion about the top five must-attend sporting events in Canada. Here is what we came up with:

5. A Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadians playoff game
Since the Maple Leafs have not played a playoff game since May, 2004 this is definitely the least likely to actually occur (and in turn, to plan and predict). At some point, you have think this trend will end and the Leafs will once again play meaningful spring hockey. The rivalry with the Canadians is legendary and to see the two teams battle in a playoff game would be epic. Based on the first quarter of this season don't get your hopes up...it looks like the trend is still very much intact.

4. A Saskatchewan Roughriders home football game

Similar to the Green Bay Packers, Saskatchewan Roughriders fans actually own and control their team. This seems to be a winning formula as there are no better fans on the planet than those loyal Green Rider fans. The atmosphere and passion at their home games is palpable and it's something any true sports fan should experience. If you get a chance to go, check into the Best Western Seven Oaks in Regina. Among other things, it has a fabulous indoor heated pool and water slides.

3. The Tim Horton's Brier and/or The Scott Tournament of Hearts
What's more Canadian than curling? "The Brier" is the men's national championship and "the Scotties" is the women's. These weeklong events are way more fun than you think since curlers in general are among the most social athletes you'll ever find. In February, 2011 the Scotties are in Charlottetown, PEI while the Brier is in London, Ont. in early March. If you still haven't had your fill, this coming year the Men's World Curling Championship will take place in Regina, Saskatchewan in early April.

2. Grand Prix Montreal
Outside Canada, this is certainly the most popular event on this list and though I've never been, only heard good things. Montreal is always a wonderful place to be and the city literally converts to an international racing mecca every June to host this world-class event. If you want to go, buy tickets soon. Hotels fill up quickly, too. Check Best Western online and knock this one of your list soon.

1. The Grey Cup

Without a doubt, the one must-attend sporting events in Canada every year is the Grey Cup. With the 98th rendition of the annual event having just completed, we are now nearing the sport's centennial. The location is still to be determined, but you know it's going to be something to remember. This year's game set a new record, selling out in Edmonton quickly. Next year will be a good one, too, as it will take place in Vancouver.

So those are our top five must-attend sporting events. The great thing about an exercise like this is how subjective it is. What did I overlook? I'm sure there are some golf and tennis fans out there who'd like to chime in?
