It's starting to look and feel a lot like Christmas. As I write this blog, I'm without my car because it's off getting winterized. Between that and putting up our tree this past weekend, I think it's time to write my Travel Wish List for 2011.
- My first wish is for travel statistics to continue their rebound. This can be labelled a selfish wish since I make my living through travel, but honestly that's only partly true. The overall economy and travel numbers are correlated, and since travel is usually one of the first things both people and corporations cut when times get tough, their rebound is a very good signal for economists.
- Next, I hope that free Wi-Fi continues to become the norm across the country. Aside from when I'm driving, I should be able to access the Internet from just about anywhere. This definitely includes at thirty five thousand feet! However, as geek.com recently reported, people are still reluctant to pay for Internet access regardless of where they are. Mile-high Wi-Fi should continue to be an interesting topic to follow in 2011. Whichever major airline decides to offer this amenity for free will create a nice competitive advantage, just as companies like Best Western have done back on the ground.
- Another wish for me is that the violence settles down in Mexico. I've been trying unsuccessfully for years to convince my family to take an all-inclusive winter escape to the Mayan Riviera. Each year as we start to plan, something unfavourable hits the news. I won't give up that easily, but here's hoping for a calmer year in Mexico to help me build my next case.
- Finally, I hope to cross another item off my travel must-see list. I don't have anything major planned just yet, but 2011 seems like a perfect time for a special trip. Italy, Hawaii and Southern California are all in the top five. Only time will tell, but that's one of the best things about travel-- the anticipation and excitement of, 'Where next?"
Happy and safe holidays to everyone, and please let me know what's on your travel wish list!
