Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?

Well from April through November, he may just be at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario. The festival is a great Canadian story--one that demonstrates the power of an idea and an example of how local ingenuity and pride can revive a city.
Tom Patterson, a local journalist, wanted to revitalize the town's economy and so he founded the Stratford Shakespearean Festival of Canada. Tom's idea was to create a theatre festival dedicated to the works of William Shakespeare, as the town shares the name of Shakespeare's birthplace.
Patterson achieved his goal and the Stratford Shakespearean Festival became a legal entity on October 31, 1952. On July 13, 1953 actor Alec Guinness spoke the first lines of the first play produced by the festival. Many famous actors have performed in Stratford and Tom's little idea has become a big deal!
The small town of 30,000 embraced the idea and now hosts one of the country's most prominent festivals!
This summer, there are 12 major productions scheduled, including the Bard's own The Two Gentlemen of Verona, George Walker's King of Thieves, and even Peter Pan, which is high on my son's list.
If you're going to visit Stratford, it's best to plan early. One of the best properties is Best Western Parlour Historic Inn and Suites, a fabulous boutique hotel in the heart of downtown. With just 28 guest rooms, it's best to book sooner than later.
Stratford is approximately two hours southwest of Toronto by car. If you're looking for a great cultural experience for the family in a quaint and lovely little hamlet , check out Stratford this summer.
