Winter Adventure Recommendations

January 27 2009 by Neal Mueller

winteradventures.jpgAdventure comes in all colors; my favorite is white! Snowflakes, crisp air, the silence of a snowfall. Here's the list of adventures I'm considering this winter season. I split them into three categories. Extreme, not-extreme, and in between.

Extreme:

  • Dog sledding. What could be more exhilarating than mushing forward, geeing right, and hawing left behind your very own team of 7 panting huskies as they run down a snow-covered forest trail?

  • Ice climbing. What could be more death-defying than climbing a frozen waterfall?

  • Mountain climbing. What could be more self-validating than to climb a mountain in winter and sit atop the ice-laden summit as if it were God's icy front porch?

Not-extreme:
  • Building snowmen. What could release your inner 9-year old better than stacking three huge snowballs atop each other and adorning it with charcoal eyes, a stick smile and a carrot nose?

  • Snow angels. What could be happier than flopping down and bringing heaven to earth?

  • Ice fishing. What could be more escapist than holing yourself in a bobhouse on the lake with your favorite rod, some fresh bait, country music, and a small flask of scotch to make the chill go away?

In between:
  • Snow shoeing. What could be more serene than tromping through a silent glen of evergreens covered in a fresh layer of powder?

  • Snowball fights. What could make you laugh harder than smacking your mate in the arse with a soft ball of beautiful snow?

  • Ice skating. What could be more fulfilling than spinning circles around your sweetie on the open rink, or checking your hockey opponent against the boards in the attack zone?
