For motorcycling's first century, men have dominated the field. In recent years, women have discovered that the joys of riding don't have to be limited to the pillion, and more female motorcyclists have taken to the road.
The Internet has become a great gathering place and resource for women riders.
Women Riders Now is a great site with reviews, articles and guides written specifically for female riders. There's some great information about how to get started on a bike, written in a straightforward, unintimidating way.
Women on Wheels is an organization with the mission "to unite all women motorcycle enthusiasts for recreation, education, mutual support, recognition, and to promote a positive image of motorcycling."
Motor Maids, Inc. is the oldest continuously operating organization dedicated to women's motorcycling in the world. Established in 1940, the Motor Maids "are a diverse group of women motorcyclists united through a passion for riding while fostering a positive image and promoting safe riding skills."
The Women's Motorcyclist Foundation lets riders combine their passion for riding with a good cause - raising funds for charity. In addition to promoting motorcycling and safe riding skills, the Foundation organizes rides and other events as fundraisers for the Susan G. Komen Fund, among other worthy causes.
Not a company to be left behind, Harley-Davidson has created a program devoted to women riders, the Harley-Davidson Women's Roadmap to Riding. The Roadmap outlines six easy steps for a woman who wants to hit the road on her own Harley: "1. Learn with the Best; 2. Get Your License; 3. Find & Fit Your Perfect Harley; 4. Buying Made Easy; 5. Get Geared Up; 6. Practice & Learn." Harley has a wide selection of gear for women, and a smart set of recommendations for bikes. And no, they're not all Sportsters.
With all of these great resources, and more available all the time, there's no reason more women shouldn't be hitting the road with friends this year. Why not saddle up and give motorcycling a try?
