Clean At Last!

remote.JPGWinter is here, forcing many of us into close quarters with others in planes, trains and automobiles. Unfortunately, cold and flu viruses come along for the ride, and end up infecting a significant number of travellers. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Nearly every frequent traveler has heard that the most handled thing in a hotel room is the TV remote, right? Starting this year, one of the first things you'll notice when you walk in your room at a Best Western is the new "fresh remote"--which has been specially sanitized by housekeepers, then slipped into a hygienic wrap. This is part of Best Western's new "Extreme Clean" campaign that you'll be hearing more about in coming months.

Here are some more tips to help stay healthy:

- Before you take off on your trip, check the cities you'll visit using Google's new Flu Trends site. Google has found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people are actually getting sick in a given region--and they've plotted outbreaks on a map. Great idea!

So pack along a few antibacterial wipes or a small bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Neither is as effective as soap and warm water, but they do the trick when you can't find a sink. Also, avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes unless your hands are clean, because germs enter the body through mucous membranes.

- Frequent travelers are exposed to more germs more often than non-travelers, so consider getting a flu shot this year if you've not already done so. Take a daily multivitamin during cold and flu season. Pack along some long-acting decongestant sprays or tablets, which help keep blocked nasal passages open during take off and landing when cabin pressure changes.

- Finally, always carry a handkerchief and/or tissues. Use them if your nose is running or to cover your nose/mouth when coughing or sneezing to prevent spreading your bugs to fellow travelers.
