Home Or Hotel For The Holidays?

thanksgiving_fam.jpgFrequent travelers typically look toward the peak holiday travel season with equal amounts of joy and trepidation.

The joy, of course, comes with the increased likelihood of spending time with friends and family.

The trepidation comes in the form of worry about high prices, travel hassles, traffic, crowds and ... I'll go ahead and say it ... too much time with friends and family.

I just don't understand why more people don't stay at hotels when visiting family and friends for the holidays. Why should you? Here are the top five reasons to check in at a hotel:

1) Due to lack of demand from business travelers, hotel rates over holidays typically run at annual lows, especially at those located in suburban office parks. Bargains and deals abound, and there are plenty of rooms to choose from. As at other times of year, always book hotels that include extras like breakfast, internet and parking in the base rate.

2) Hotels beds are more comfortable than the lumpy sofa beds or blow up mattresses you'll be sleeping on at the in-laws. As an added bonus, you won't have to share the hallway bathroom with your Uncle Milt.

3) Best Western Rewards members can redeem as few as 8,000 points for a free night at many Best Western hotels. And as always, if you pay for your stay, you'll be earning 10 points per dollar spent. And those points earned can then be redeemed for holiday gifts such as Best Western Travel Cards, retail gift cards, merchandise and more.

4) Despite their protests, deep down I bet your hosts would love to have you stay at a nearby hotel instead of at their house. If grandma and grandpa are going to the trouble of preparing and hosting a big feast, why add the additional burden of overnight guests?

5) Staying at a hotel helps reduce the stress around an already stressful time. Everyone has their own space. You get to stay on your normal bedtime and wake-up routines, and so do the folks you are visiting.

Have you ever stayed at a hotel when visiting friends and family during the holidays?
