I'm Liking My iPad

ipad app.jpgBased on surveys and interaction, I know most readers of this blog are not necessarily early adopters of technology. But even if you're just learning how to use a cell phone, you've no doubt heard the hype surrounding Apple's iPad.

Have you seen one yet? Maybe you've stepped into an Apple store to fiddle around with one? I did just that last spring and by the time my birthday rolled around in May, I received one as a gift. Now I'm one of the nearly eight million Americans toting around an iPad.

I'm very much tied to my laptop, so I was a relatively slow adopter of this new device. Over time, it's become indispensable when I'm on the road--for entertainment value mostly. It's a device for consuming media, not so much for creating it.

I download movies to watch on flights. Why? Because my laptop doesn't have the battery life for an entire movie any more. That's especially true if I need to use it to access in-flight Wi-Fi which is a big drain on laptop battery power. My fully-charged iPad runs about 10 hours between charges and it's never run out of juice on me.

I've downloaded a few games like the super-popular "Angry Birds" to help pass the time when I'm stuck in a weather-related delay.

When I'm checked in and cozy at a Best Western, I curl up with my iPad and use a new program called "FlipBoard" which turns my Facebook and Twitter feeds into a magazine with photos and articles written by friends and colleagues. It also allows me to read several newspapers in an easy-to-read magazine style format.

And now, it's super easy to plan and manage my Best Western stays with the new Best Western To Go app. Using the built-in GPS, the app shows me where the nearest Best Western hotels are. Given the large screen, I can easily access property photos to help make the choice between several properties.

As tablet computers like the iPad continue to make inroads into the travel experience, it probably won't be long until we all get our hands on one!
