New Year's In Scottsdale, Arizona

Happy New Year! We were lucky enough to ring in the New Year in style in beautiful Scottsdale, Ariz. We had two weeks of the most consistently amazing weather you can imagine. It also was the longest period of time I have avoided some form of precipitation! I found it uncanny to check the long range weather forecast on my iPhone and see a beaming sun icon with zero percent chance of rain---day after day! What do weather forecasters actually do in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area?
While we did spend a lot of time relaxing by the pool, we found plenty of other ways to entertain the family. Here are a few activities that I really enjoyed, and that you may not have heard about:
Pinnacle Peak - located in Northeast Scottsdale, Pinnacle Peak is a great mountain park and hiking trail. There is a gradual yet challenging four-mile hike that takes you up to some of the best views in the area. At the top, you will have a wonderful look out into the Valley, which is priceless. Best of all, it's free and a great workout!
iPic Theatre- I may never be able to watch a movie in a regular movie theatre again! Because I am very tall, it can often be difficult to sit through a movie-- but not at iPic. We sat in big, comfy leather reclinable seats complete with blankets and a pillow. Popcorn was included and I had beer and pizza brought to me. Pure bliss! Make sure you see a great movie (we saw Sherlock Holmes) though, or an unintended nap is certain.
Outlet Shopping at Anthem Outlets - Fifteen minutes northwest of Scottsdale are great outlet shopping and one of the biggest Christmas trees in the U.S. The Anthem Outlets have all the big brands, great deals and, for us Canadians, fewer taxes. If you like shopping, you'll love the Anthem Outlets.
There are so many more things to see and do, but with holiday commitments this year and a few rounds of golf, I simply ran out of time. Next time I head to Scottsdale I have to see the Musical Instrument Museum, a Phoenix Coyotes, Suns or Cardinals game and a trip to Rawhide, an 1880s western town.
I am already planning my next trip back, maybe even as early as October for my 40th birthday! If you want to come help me celebrate and are looking for a great place to stay in the area, there are two BEST WESTERN PLUS properties in Scottsdale - the BEST WESTERN PLUS Sundial and BEST WESTERN PLUS Papago Inn & Resort. They both have pools, complimentary continental breakfast and high speed Internet access.
Do you have any tips or ideas for things to do in Scottsdale?
