Redeeming Points for Summer Trips

iStock_000012083792XSmall.jpgWe recently completed an early summer survey of the Best Western Diamond 100 advisory board (BWD100) in which we asked how travel routines change during summer compared to other times of the year.

Here's a sampling of the hundreds of write-in answers provided by our peripatetic group:

First off, many members said their travel routines don't change during summer months. "No changes at all. When I have to go, I have to go, period," wrote one member. Another said, "My routine does not change much during summer, but my business always seems to pick up in warmer months, which is a good thing!"

Among those whose routines do change, many said weather was the primary factor. Several folks in the construction industry said their business travel picks up during summer as they rush to complete projects during the warmer, drier months.

"I tend to do a lot more road travel during fair summer months and fly more during the winter," wrote a member from Canada. Another member from California said, "Warm weather allows me to travel over mountain passes to Reno and Mammoth Lakes more often in the summer than the winter." A member from the Great Lakes region who works in shipping said he travels more frequently during summer, "because during the winter ships are docked due to too much ice."

One member speaking for many said, "The biggest difference is that it's just a lot more pleasurable to travel during the summer. The weather's better. People are in better moods. Days are longer."

Several travelers said routines change during summer due to the higher volume of travelers. "I always make it a point to make earlier departures during summer to avoid increased traffic on roads," wrote one member. Another said, "I always try making hotel reservations earlier because few hotels save space for regulars during summer months." Several members also mention that they tend to avoid the pool or exercise rooms during summer due to crowding issues.
