With airlines and airports expected to be packed over the next few months, it may be the right time to consider taking to the highway instead of the skyway for summer travel plans.

I expect airline flights will be close to 100 percent full and airfares are up nearly 20 percent over last year according to Bing Travel. The good news is that gasoline prices are expected to remain right around $3 per gallon, so there's even more reason to stay grounded this summer.

Every year around this time, Ford Motors churns out helpful information for road warriors like us. This year, they've offered a lot of unique advice that I've never seen anywhere else. Here's a sampling:

• Bothered by dead bugs on your grille and don't feel like investing in one of those "bras" that fit over the front end of your car? Ford advises wiping your windshield with a dryer sheet, which should keep bugs from sticking. Ford also recommends spritzing your bumpers with cooking spray for the same effect.
• Ford also recommends filling a cup holder halfway full with baking soda to absorb odors. I've always suggested adding a few dryer sheets under the seat to help with summer odors, too.
• Pack along old sheets, which you can drape over car seats that become baking hot in the summer sun.
• Driving into the bright sun all afternoon? Take a tip from baseball players. Put a drop of baby oil on your fingertip, dip it in cooled wood ashes and wipe it under your eyes to help cut the glare. (Just be sure to wipe it off before you check in at the Best Western!). A hat is always a good idea too.
