Stanley Cup Finals

iStock_000014431282XSmall.jpgThis is a fantastic time of the year! The weather is finally seasonal again and warm, but most of Canada is still focused on the ice. As I write this the Vancouver Canucks are only two games away from hockey's greatest prize; Lord Stanley's Cup. The Canucks are celebrating their fortieth anniversary in style, winning the President's Trophy and now on the verge of the franchise's first Stanley Cup Championship.

It has been quite a ride for the entire province of British Columbia in the last few years. First, hosting the Olympics and now a Stanley Cup Final (and hopefully a parade is in the very near future!). Vancouver won't stop there, they also have the pleasure of hosting the Grey Cup (Canada's CFL Superbowl) this coming November.

If Vancouver can win just two more games, this would be the first Canadian team to bring the Cup home since the 1993 Montreal Canadians. Vancouver, it would seem, has a cool trend on its side. In 1976 the city of Montreal hosted the Olympics and the next year the Montreal Canadians won the Cup. In 1988, Calgary hosted the Olympics and low and behold, the Calgary Flames won the Cup in 1989. It really does seem inevitable. I guess the solution for disgruntled Toronto Maple Leafs fans is simply getting awarded the Olympics!

Vancouver has certainly taken over the Canadian spotlight recently and for good reason. If you have never been to this magnificent city, it's time to check it out. Vancouver is the first city to have been ranked in the top ten for five straight years as the "most liveable city" by Economist Intelligence Unit. The weather, infrastructure, culture and of course scenery are all world class.

If you are looking to visit, book soon. There are a dozen options for either BEST WESTERN or BEST WESTERN PLUS hotels within forty kilometres of downtown Vancouver. As always, you can't go wrong with great customer service, free high speed internet and many other important amenities like parking and breakfast.

With any luck, if you book and go in the next week or so, you may catch a parade and one fantastic party! Go Canucks! Which Canadian based team do you think is the next to win the Stanley Cup?
