Turkey Time for Travel

When the leaves are falling and the weather's cooling off, that means it's time to start plotting and planning for the peak Thanksgiving week. Whether you're hitting the road on business or for feast, here are some things you need to be considering now:

  • Thanksgiving week is always one of the busiest times of year to be on the road or in a plane. If you're planning to drive, avoid heavy afternoon traffic on Friday, Nov. 19, Wednesday, Nov. 24, and Sunday, Nov. 28.
  • Interestingly, the busiest days to be flying have changed recently. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving has traditionally been one of the craziest travel days. But recently, the peak pre-Thanksgiving day has switched to the Tuesday before. (Nov. 23).
  • Another trend that's emerged recently is that more Americans are taking the entire week off. That means you'll find big crowds, long lines, full planes and higher prices on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19 and 20, then again on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 28 and 29.
  • When's the best time to be on the road or in the sky over Thanksgiving? There's a sweet spot smack in the middle of it all. Travel on Thanksgiving Day (Thurs, Nov. 25), Friday the 26th or Saturday the 27th and you'll most likely breeze right through the busiest travel week of the year!
